The 2007 National Institute on Genealogical Research

Friday, November 3rd, 2006

I see that the 2007 National Institute on Genealogical Research will be taking place in Washington D.C. July 15 to 21 this next summer. In looking at the date, I realized that this next session will be the 25th anniversary of my own graduation from the program. It’s terrific. I loved it and I know […]

Stephen Morse to Speak at Pittsfield Archives

Friday, October 13th, 2006

I just found out that Stephen Morse will be speaking at the Pittsfield branch of the National Archives on October 23. I also note that seating is limited. I know that to be true, for I’ve spoken there a couple times - getting out maybe 100 people - and many were sitting on the floor! […]

NARA Hours Will Be Shortened as of October 2 - That’s Monday, Folks

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

We’ve seen this coming and did what we could to reduce the damage. It looks like our petitions had some effect. We can thank Dick Eastman for leading the charge in attempting to get NARA to stop the reduction of hours at the National Archives. In the long run however, hours were shortened dramatically - […]

Our Vanishing Electronic History

Monday, September 25th, 2006

Our historic memory is vanishing as I write this blog. For decades our records have been kept on media that only stays technologically current for a decade or so. Sure - the media may last 50 years if kept under perfect conditions, but can we find a machine that will read the media?
Thinking of my […]

Congress Wants More Details on NARA’s Electronic Records Archives Project

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

The National Archives and Records Administration’s effort to establish an electronic records archive is largely compliant with congressional requirements, although the agency needs to provide more detail about how it is spending money on the project, congressional auditors said.
In a new report, the Government Accountability Office said NARA must give Congress more details on its […]

More World War II Digital Documents For Dead, Wounded, etc.

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

My friend, Jean Nudd, Archivst at the NARA Northeast Region in Pittsfield, gave me a heads-up on two groups of digital online records for all 50 States that deal with WWII casualties. As I noted in my blog a few days ago, there must be more of the WWII casuaty booklets available. Sure enough, the […]

National Archives to Reduce Reading Room Hours Dramatically

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

As I member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, I just got the following email from our President, Sharon Tate Moody. It looks like plans to cut the reading room hours at the National Archives is moving ahead. This is a concern for many genealogists - for it’s genealogists that make up the bulk of […]

National Archives Closed through Monday Because of Flooding

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

It seems that the flooding in the nation’s capital has knocked out the National Archives’ Air conditioning units, placing documents in jepardy. They brought in massive dehumidifiers to alleviate the problem. Water covered part of the theatre area, causing damage. It’s said that the Archives will be closed at least through Monday. Developing…
